Shades of Winter, Bogong High Plains VIC
Alpine National Park, Falls Creek, Victoria, Australia
Set amidst Victoria's highest peaks, the Bogong High Plains like many of Australia's wilderness areas were once the domain of indigenous tribes and more recently with European settlement, bushrangers and cattlemen. As the 19th and 20th centuries unfolded, the face of the landscape slowly changed. Roughly hewn bush huts appeared across the high plains in the 1800's while the 1900's saw the development of the Kiewa Valley Hydroelectric scheme and Falls Creek ski resort. Although no longer a true wilderness area, when the weather closes in and the alpine grasses disappear beneath metres of snow, the Bogong High Plains once again radiate the wild essence of an inhospitable, windswept landscape.
