Melbourne's Heart, South Bank VIC

South Bank, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

Long before rivals John Batman and John Fawkner established a humble timber settlement on the banks of the Yarra River in 1835, the people of the Kulin Nation lived hunting and gathering where the city and suburbs of Melbourne now stand. As the new town developed, New South Wales Governor Bourke engaged surveyor Robert Hoddle to bring order, laying out the city's famous grid and paving the way for its first land sales. With gold discovered in 1850, the ensuing gold rush years brought great wealth to the new colony of Victoria, transforming the city and laying the foundations for modern Melbourne. Now 179 years since its founding, Melbourne with its sprawling parklands, iconic trams and first class facilities is recognised as one of the world's most liveable cities.
