Forsaken, Stanley TAS
Highfield Convict Barracks, Stanley, Tasmania, Australia
Crumbling in a windswept paddock high above the churning seas of Bass Strait, the Highfield Convict Barracks slowly surrender to the ravages of time. Built in 1834, this modest two story building housed convicts assigned as labourers to the Van Diemen's Land Company. Founded in 1824 as a producer of high quality wool for export to the British homeland, the company received a land grant at Circular Head in Tasmania's rugged north west. Struggling to retain workers in this remote section of the island, convict labour provided the heart and soul of the company's workforce. With its fate sealed at conception through a poor allocation of land, the company and its investors experienced heavy losses. Never realising its potential, the Van Diemen's Land Company withdrew from wool production and by the 1850's had leased or sold much of its land.
