First Light, Port Campbell VIC
Gibson's Beach, Port Campbell National Park, Victoria, Australia
The beauty and seeming tranquility of Gibson's Beach masks the treacherous and unpredictable nature of the Shipwreck Coast. Reserved and peaceful one minute, the powerful Southern Ocean can turn without warning, venting its fury as changing weather blows in. At high tide these powerful surges thunder into the towering limestone, eroding and slowly driving the coast inland. When the tide retreats however, a stretch of golden sand emerges, inviting visitors to descend the famed 'Gibson's Steps'. Named after Hugh Gibson an early settler, today's steps offer safe passage down to the beach, building upon the legacy of Gibson and earlier the Kirrae Whurrong people who first opened access to the shore. For those who do venture down, a personal and dramatic perspective of this striking coastline awaits.
